10 Ways your Website is like a Haircut

You’re thinking “what is she talking about” aren’t you?

Here’s 10 ways your website really IS like a haircut!

1. You don’t start with much!

Most of us don’t have much, if any, hair when we’re born.  We don’t always know what colour it’s going to be, how long it might grow, how thick it is, straight, curly … you get my drift! Your website starts like a blank canvas – still to be formed, grown, nurtured.

2. It grows

Just like you hair, your website grows. You start with a few pages, a few images, and all of a sudden there’s often a whole lot more of it! It’s entirely within your control to manage it, but if you don’t spend a some time planning, your website, just like your hair, can get a bit unruly, but no matter what you do, it just keeps growing!

3. It attracts attention

For good or bad, your website attracts attention. If it’s unkempt, that attention won’t always be good. But … if you care for it, pay attention to it, maintain it, nurture it, well, the attention is very welcome for all the right reasons!

4. You can change the style

Do you change your hair style very often? I do! You can do the same for your website, although I probably wouldn’t change it quite as often as I change my hairstyle, but you should think about changing it every once in a while. If you don’t it will just look stale and out of date, and you don’t want that! Websites have fashion cycles, and if you don’t make some changes to your website’s style every once in a while, well, that’s not good is it?! You don’t want your site to stay the same for so long it comes back into fashion do you?!

5. You can change the colour, or add a splash (of colour!)

Just like your hair, you can change the primary color scheme of your website or just add a splash of colour to brighten it up. It can work wonders!

6. You can cut it

You need to cut your hair to keep it in shape and you need to do the same for your website. Trust me, it will pay off. If you have information (pages, posts etc) on your site that aren’t used, not kept up to date, or look a bit unkempt, you need to trim it a bit!

7. You can change it completely

You can of course, change your style complete. Perhaps you’ve just gone through a re-branding exercise for your business – you mustn’t forget to include your website in that process. It’s alarming how many businesses (still) add on their website at the end of the process like an afterthought and that’s immediately obvious if you compare ads, printed brochures, business cards with your website!

8. You can convey a mood

What more can I say. In the same way your hair says something about you, you want your website to represent your business – what does it say?

Conservative, quirky, colourful, plain, functional, sensible, alternative, bohemian, retro, spiky, exotic, corporate, dark, girly, pretty, fussy, sleek ..

9. It will grow again

Just like your hair, no matter how much you trim/cut from it, it will grow again! Some grow faster than others, some have more split ends (think of them like broken links!) but no matter what you do, your website will grow again!

10. You can do it yourself, but every once in a while, you need professional help!

You can cut your hair yourself. You can colour it yourself, you can “do” it yourself, but after a while, it shows. You can certainly put your website together yourself, but just like your hair, every once in a while you need a professional to do some work for you! It’s an investment that pays off!
